今年、2020年はオリンピックイヤーです!
海外から多くの訪日客が予想されていますが、日本への注目が高まっているときだからこそ、自国のことをしっかり説明できるように備えておきたいですよね。
今回からお届けするこのシリーズでは、日本の文化や習慣、食べ物などを英語でわかりやすく説明するために必要な表現やヒントをご紹介します!
さて、令和の時代に入ってしばらく経ちますが、今回のテーマは『元号』です。まずは説明に必要な語句から見てみましょう。
・era name / Japanese era / Imperial era(元号)
・era (時代・年代)
・specific period of years (特定の年代)
・be attached to (~に付随する)
・the dominical year / western calendar(西暦)
・His Majesty the Emperor(天皇陛下)※His Majestyは敬称
・originate in(~に由来する・に始まる)
・ancient (古代の)
・reign(主権をにぎる)
・ascend throne(即位する)
・Chinese characters / Kanji characters(漢字)
・be derived from (~に由来する・から生じる)
・ideal (理想的な・申し分のない)
・Gengo is the name of the Japanese era attached to a specific period of years.
・We have two calendar systems, the western calendar and the one based on Gengo.
・Gengo is used on documents, calendars, coins and so on.
・Gengo originated in ancient China on the idea that the emperor reigns.
・The first Gengo used in Japan was Taika, which began in 645.
・Gengo changes when the new emperor ascends the throne in modern days, but historically they changed more frequently.
・The current era is Reiwa, which began on May 1st 2019 when the new Emperor ascended.
・There have been 248 era names in total.
・Japan is the only country that currently uses both Gengo and the dominical year.
・Gengo uses two Chinese characters (Kanji) in recent years.
・It must have a good meaning to be an ideal for Japanese citizens.
・It must be easy to write and read.
・Reiwa uses Kanji characters derived from the Manyoshu, the oldest collection of Japanese poems.
・Gengo names cannot repeat itself.
